Learn about the Day to Day Running’s of the British Royal Family

Posted in Traveling Tips by admin on the July 28th, 2008

Public Responsibility & Image

Members of the Royal Family share tens of hundreds of royal appointments annually, throughout England as officially documented in the Court Circular, to admire, promote and be taught about the achievements or performances of people organisations and firms in a mixture of sectors of life. As representatives of the sovereign, they often join the British Nation in celebrating recorded incidents, festivals, celebratory & disastrous incidences & typically also funds or partakes in selected charitable, educational & public activities.

Their travels abroad on behalf of the U.K. (called State Appointments when the sovereign officially visits other state officials) attracts public interest to great interactions within & between the Commonwealth & other nations, to British freight and trade, & to Britain as a historical, vacation, & holiday location. Their present functions and established tasks adds up to the apex of a contemporary “royal court,” & give a uniquely British & historical vision to royal procedures (E.g. Trooping the Colour) & outlook to public demonstrations (Like that of the Garden Parties, Ascot).

During their lives they draw immense press exposure in the shape of photographic, printed & radio commentary on the topic of their daily activities, family associations, means of passage, characters, fashion, actions, & public functions.

Funding

Cash that aid the Royal Queen in the running of her tasks as the head of state of the United Kingdom comes from the Civil List. This is a return of a tiny portion of the takings from the Crown Lands that are surrendered by the Queen to parliament at the appointment of every reign; all Crown Land being controlled by The Crown Estates, an association that is exclusively accountable to parliament. In the 2003-04 fiscal year, the total presented was ?176 million, where the Head of State’s outgoings was merely ?36 million. The Queen’s payments doesn’t however include the charge of guards. Information about the English Royal Family can be found at (enjoyEngland.com) the official site for tourism in England.

Discount Las Vegas Shows

Posted in Traveling Tips by admin on the June 13th, 2008

Even as a large number of tourists continue to patronize dozens of theatres, lounges and auditoriums, heavy discounts are often available for a number of productions shows in Las Vegas — be it a general concert, musical, comedy shows, adult oriented entertainment, magic show or Broadway-type plays. Most of the discounts are offered during the weekdays, but often, some of the weekend shows also offer discounts.

The show discounts are more commonly incorporated within various tour packages, especially with the growing trend of lounges and resorts hosting such shows. In lounges and restaurants, free drinks and food coupons are often parts of the discount package whereas in exclusive auditoriums or theatres, discounts are offered frequently in the form of an additional free ticket when you buy two at full price. It is easier to get large discounts for those shows, which are advertised well in advance and are open for reservations. Online booking, as well as reservations of tickets months ahead of the actual show, not only secures your seat but also a much lower rate. Some of the discount packages even offer “free show with the purchase of a drink”.

Some of the casinos have started offering discounted tickets to various popular shows in the city for big winners — as well as big players. The discounts are available not only at the box office, but also on the secondary market. It just depends on your bargaining skill — ticket broker might be ready to throw in an extra discount. So even if it is full house show, don’t lose heart, maybe someone wants to get rid of his ticket at a discount. And don’t forget to keep an eye out, because even with all the hype and hoopla, some show organizers offer discounts at the box office a night before, or the night of, the show you want to see.

Las Vegas Shows provides detailed information on Las Vegas Shows, Las Vegas Show Tickets, Best Shows in Las Vegas, Discount Las Vegas Shows and more. Las Vegas Shows is affiliated with Las Vegas Golf Packages.

Words Unsaid

Posted in Traveling Tips by admin on the June 11th, 2008

A few years ago some friends of ours came from Germany for a visit. High on their list of sights was Washington DC, famous around the world for its classic white marble buildings and clean, wide streets. Though only a five hours car ride from our house, the four of us decided to stay overnight in a hotel and continue our sight seeing the next day.

Unfortunately, the hotels were completely booked and I had to widen our search considerably before I located a motel with a vacancy. As hosts, we were slightly embarrassed as we entered the less well known areas of DC. Our German guests couldn’t understand how the seediest of housing existed so close to the impressive halls of American Government. We explained how the working classes liked to live where many jobs availed themselves in the infrastructure of a government complex as the street lights grew dimmer and the buildings poorer.

Finally arriving at our destination, we entered the motel lobby and approached the desk. A hard looking mature woman responded to our request with the question, “Will that be for one hour or all night?” Perplexed, my wife answered, “All night, of course”. The woman licked the pencil and checked off a box. Then my wife added, pointing to we two men, “We are all together and these are our husbands.”

The woman closed her eyes, showed us her palms, turned the book around for us to sign and in a weary, complaisant voice stated, “I don’t want to know.” !

Retired photographer. Do you have a funny experience for me?

A Visit to Shanghai China - Part One

Posted in Traveling Tips by admin on the June 6th, 2008

It looks like all roads leads to China these days. If you are into business, attending one training course, or taking a vacation, your most likely destination could be one Chinese city or the other. China is fast becoming an ecomnomic powerhouse and with it comes properity and modernization. China is also one of the few places not affected by modern terrorism. So how about taking a visit to china on your next vacation. One of the most beautiful cities in china is shanghai. One thing that strikes one immediately about the city of shanghai is that there are a lot of highrise (skyscraper) buildings. The density of highrise buildings is comparable to that of Newyork city. Shanghai is also one of the most prosperous cities in China. There are interesting places to visit in shanghai. In part one of this article on shanghai I will be writing on the places you can visit while vacationing or doing business in shanghai.

One of the most interesting places to visit in Shanghai, china is the the Bund. It is located in the Huangpu district, in the central part of Shanghai. It is a place you can go and relax with your spouse or girlfriend or even by yourself. It is an open place that overlooks the Huangpu River. This river runs right across the city of Shanghai. On the other side of the Bund is the Oriental Pearl Tower. The tower is about 396 ft high and can be seen clearly from the Bund.

At the Bund, there are relaxation spots where you can sit, take pictures and generally feel the cool breeze from the river. You are sure to find the usual hawkers of various kinds of souvenirs and fake wrist watches of all kinds. If you want you could pay a small amount of yuan (chinese currency)and take a ride on one of the numerous boats that ply the river so that you can have a good view of the Oriental Pearl Tower from the river. One of the interesting things you can do on the Bund is take pictures with your back to the tower. The background is fantastic. You could even use the picture for a postcard.

The oriental pearl tower is another very interesting tourist spot to visit. The tower, when you get close to it, is an achitectural masterpirce and a beauty to behold. It is just like the Eiffel tower in paris. You pay a small amount to enter through the base of the tower where the lift that will take you up is situated. There are three stages of the tower corresponding to three differrent hieghts. The higher you go the more money you pay. I highly recommend going all the way to the top. That is where the best view is. The lifts are high speed lifts that will take you to the top in seconds. This is also a good spot for taking pictures. Two most interesting things about the tower is the view, which is fantastic from the top most spot on the tower. Another is the souvenirs you can find. This a place to buy gift items of various kinds that depict the city of shanghai. There are restaurants and spots where you can relax to catch your breath, and take pictures.

Another interesting place in Shanghai is the Peoples Square. This is an historic place. It used to be where people go to gather to make speeches. The place is made up of beautiful flowers and scenery.

Very close to the peoples square is one of the most famous shopping street in the whole of china. That is the Nanjin street. It is a street with modern shopping malls comparable to malls like printemp or galarylaffayete in paris. Here you will find all you could ever dream of having. That is if you have the money to pay for it. The prices of items here are government controlled. That is you may not find great differences in prices of items amongst the various shops. But you are free to bargain. Usually with a calculator. There are many peculairities of life in China. Especially for a foreigner. These are things anyone should know before visiting China. Some of these I will be writing about in part two of a “trip to Shanghai China”.

Extreme Marine Leisure - Toys for the Boys

Posted in Traveling Tips by admin on the May 30th, 2008

So you bought yourself a radio Controlled Hovercraft, but wonder why your pet hamster should have all the fun. Well now, adrenalin junkies can now purchase their own marine leisure hovercraft, and learn to levitate a little.

As an alternative to Jet Skis, RIBs, Quad Bikes etc, leisure hovercraft are certainly more fun to drive. In the first place, they are truly all-terrain - you can drive them straight out of the sea and up the beach, or use them on grass, explore tidal estuaries, stop to collect a few shell fish perhaps, or have a picnic on the sands, with room enough for three adults. Guaranteed to raise a smile.

Start the engine, and your skirt will fill with air, lifting you 8 inches clear of the ground, so you are up and away. Open the throttle, and the craft will pick up speed, up to 50 mph depending on the size of your engine. No need to find a slipway, any beach or riverbank should do. No need to check tide data, you’ll rise above sand and mud, and while strong currents are a concern for boats, hovercraft are not in contact with the water, so rise above that sort of problem. No need to check your depth meter, you have no propeller to worry about, just levitate and drive. Submerged rocks or coral? Just gloss over them. Hovercraft have very real advantages over more conventional marine craft; while you are out having fun on the sand flats, boaties and jet Skiers will be checking their clocks and tide tables.

Are they easier to drive? It takes just ten minutes to understand the basics; you just use a normal handlebar for steering with twist grip throttle. Steer to the left or right, and the rudders will direct the air accordingly. Once you have mastered the basics, the real fun begins. The thrill of driving a small hovercraft is difficult to describe, as you have more freedom to express yourself. Floating on a cushion of air at speed, you get the feeling that perhaps you are on a magic carpet, or anti-gravity skateboard. You can do 180 turns up the beach, or perpetual 360s, 720 spins and so on. As you can drive on both sea and land, you’ll probably want to combine both in a little beach hugging exercise. You can turn in graceful loops, or slide and glide where the mood takes you. These craft make great rescue and patrol vehicles - you can access areas that are simply out of bounds for any other craft - over ice for example, so go where snowmobiles fear to tread. Bigger yachts use them as tenders.

At the end of the day, while other marine craft are hauled onto their trailers, (no fun retrieving boats on cold days) you can simply park up the beach and step out onto dry land. For further information, please visit http://www.hovpod.com

Manufactured in Southampton, England, close to where the first Hovercraft were developed and tested, the Hov Pod is enjoying tremendous success and is now being exported all over the world.

Can You Buy a Home While on Vacation?

Posted in Traveling Tips by admin on the May 25th, 2008

It may not be as crazy as it sounds. According to the National Association of Realtors, one out of every three residential homes purchased in 2004 was a second home. Many of these are mountain cabins or beach cottages. That said, buying a vacation home is not something to do on a whim.

You should plan on doing some research before you go on vacation. Perhaps the single most important point to determine up front is why you are buying a vacation home. Are you trying to generate income by renting the property? Would you like to have a place to take your family every year that will likely appreciate in value? Would you prefer some flexibility in location and like to vacation at a different spot each year?

Once you’ve determined why you’re looking for a second home, you can use that information to focus your research. Let’s say you live in Washington, D.C., and have decided to purchase a mountain home within driving distance for family use. The web is a great tool for this research. You can look at the area real estate with a simple search on Yahoo!, or other search engines. In doing a bit of research you may find that Wintergreen suits you perfectly as it meets needs for four seasons of sporting activity. The resort’s 45 holes of golf, 20+ ski and snowboard slopes, camps for children, bike trails, spa and numerous amenities are exactly what you’re seeking. So now what?

Determine your budget. There are a number of ways to do this, one of the easiest starting places is to look into mortgage pre-qualification. Look at those payments and see if they fit within your budget. Don’t forget about additional expenses like utilities, home owner’s fees, insurance and taxes. Determine if the homes you like in the area are within your budget.

Target Your Search. Decide whether you want to build a new home or want to buy one that is ready for you begin using today. Take a look at the inventory of homes in the area and don’t forget to check out local builder web sites - they’re often a great source of unadvertised properties. The web is a great tool for this research. You can look at the area real estate with a simple search on Yahoo! Going to the example above, you may search Yahoo on “Wintergreen custom home builder”. You’ll find a variety of builders, realtor and other home related sites. Check them all out.

Plan your Trip. Your research likely uncovered a few leads - call to set up appointments with builders or set up a half day with a real estate agent. Either way, you should be getting a good look at a variety of homes to get a good feel for what is available in terms of features, quality and prices. You should also plan on spending some time checking out the amenities. Do they include everything you need - is shopping convenient, can you get tee times or lift tickets easily, etc.

Double check your math. After all your research and stops during your visit, you accumulated a lot of information and probably modified your preferences along the way. Look at the budget again and be sure you’re making the right call. Look at the tax implications of how you’re planning on using the property. If you’re considering rentals, make sure to consider property management fees, buying furniture, and maintenance. After doing the math again, if the home makes sense, move quickly. Because these homes are often in areas that are appreciating quickly, recreational uses and investors are often competing for the same limited set of properties. One nice upside to this competition once you get a home is that the prices are appreciating at a very quick pace.

Good luck and happy vacationing!

Frugal Family Vacations

Posted in Traveling Tips by admin on the May 23rd, 2008

Everybody loves a nice, relaxing, vacation. The family vacation gives us a chance to focus on family and spend some quality time together. Unfortunately, sometimes the family vacation can be costly. Especially, if you have a large family.

Including a vacation in your plans can be a challenge on a tight budget. For those of you who want to get in that family quality time, yet don’t have the finances for an extravagant vacation, here are some frugal family vacation tips. Since the goal here is to get the most fun for your money, let’s talk about some frugal and low cost vacation ideas and tips that could be right for your family.

1. Camping: A great low cost option for families that enjoy the outdoors. Don’t worry, you don’t have to sleep in a tent. There are lots of state parks that rent cabins for a very reasonable fee. As an added bonus, when you are registered at a state park, you gain free entrance into all state parks.

2. Beach It: If you want to beach it, be sure to check out all your options for lodging. Sometimes a large family can do better by renting a condo or home for the week rather than staying at a hotel. Remember, you can save a tremendous amount of money if you can prepare your own meals while on vacation. A good portion of a families vacation budget can be literally “eaten up”! Even a little kitchenette in a suite can save you big bucks. If you’re campers, you can almost always find a campground near popular beach areas and get maximum savings on lodging.

3. Low Cost Lodging: Don’t forget your best resources, friends and family. Ask around to see if anyone has visited an area you plan to go. You may get lucky and have a “friend that has a friend” who maybe has a vacation spot they wouldn’t mind renting to you for a lesser fee. Sometimes people won’t rent out their vacation spots for various reasons, but don’t mind doing so if the tenant is a trusted acquaintance of a friend or family member.

4. Visit Friends and Family: Plan to visit friends and family that live far away, or even those that live close, and you rarely find the time to visit. In today’s fast paced society it’s not unusual for family and friends to lose touch. You’ll save money and get to catch up on what’s happening with friends and/or family that you haven’t visited recently. This will be fun for everyone and reinforce family togetherness.

Whatever you decide to do, if you’re traveling a great distance be sure to check all your travel options. With today’s soaring gas prices it’s not unlikely that you may be able to get there faster, and cheaper, in the air. Hey, maybe there’s a conspiracy here?

If all this just doesn’t fall into your category of “fun”, and you just have to have that exotic resort vacation, then at least be sensible about it. There are many great deals on vacation packages and off season rentals. And, oodles of travel agencies just waiting to tell you about them.

This is one area where do-it-yourself isn’t always the most practical advice. Travel agencies are privy to a lot of travel information, especially seasonal discounts, that you and I don’t have knowledge of. Do Your Research at least for goodness sake. You won’t be kicking yourself later when you come across that great deal you missed out on!

Check out your local travel agencies, as well as some of the many online agencies. Don’t forget, if you’re an AAA member you’re eligible for travel discounts. Before finalizing any plans, be sure to know your rights. What happens if you have to cancel? What is the deadline to cancel? Will you loose your deposit or is it refundable? Know your options.

Remember, the most important thing about family vacations is to spend quality time together. Have fun, and have a safe and happy frugal family vacation!
