Windscreen Repairing Service

Posted in Cars, Hardware Hub by admin on the October 30th, 2009

Replacing or fixing a broken windshield can be a simple or tedious task of owning a car, depending on the approach you take. Windscreen replacement is not for the faint of heart; it requires strength, a pair of stable hands, and a willingness to follow instructions cautiously.

All cars are different, most frequently, removing a windscreen involves loosening the urethane that supports it in place, then cautiously lifting it out of its place so as not to drop and shatter it. Next, using the a utility knife the left over urethane must be cleared away to make room for the new windscreen. The new windscreen is then glued into position, and secured with bolts. An extremely important step is to ensure that the new urethane seal is applied the right way, because any outflows can cause wind to get into the car, completely ruining the experience of driving.

You do not always need to replace your windscreen if it has a chip, it may be possible to repair it instead of replacing it. Windscreen repair is a considerably easier process. All auto parts store these days sell repair kits, and involves sealing the chip with resin. The resin the clear and does not leave a mark, and once the process is completed, it is virtually impossible to distinguish that the windshield was ever chipped. The repair kits can frequently be unreliable for repairing large cracks, however, and can sometimes make the problem worse, requiring a replacement. This job is generally better left to professionals.

If you decide to let a professional deal with your windscreen problems, you may be delighted to find that very often you do not need to bring your car to the garage. Many repair companies offer mobile services, which can be completed in a matter of an hour or less, even if the windshield requires to be replaced entirely. Mobile windscreen repair services are able to perform the service at the comfort of your own home, or at work, making the process an extremely convenient one.

Ink Cartridges: How Have They Evolved Over the Years?

Posted in Hardware Hub by admin on the June 12th, 2008

First a little history lesson…..
There was a time, long ago that printers had ribbons and used dot matrix printing to create tiny dots that, when looked at, were readable. Sometimes they were BARELY readable, however. Changing ribbons and printing wheels to change type face was a chore.

Then, in 1984, the first laser printer that used toner cartridges came into being. Quickly, no one wanted a dot matrix printer anymore. The laser printer caused powder from the toner to fuse onto the paper & the output was much clearer and much more professional in appearance. Very soon, dot matrix printers became known as “door stops”.

By 1990, ink printers that used drop-in ink became readily available and very reasonable prices. These ink cartridges were very easy to change without any fuss. The cost to the user, compared to the toner , was significantly reduced though overall cost being more a question of cents per page tended to favour the toners.

So this is where it starts getting pretty cool….
Today, ink printers using inks are so affordable that every computer owner can afford to own their own printer that is capable of using photo quality inks or for less expensive printing, inks that are remanufactured or “generic” or non-original manufacture. These can even be refilled in many cases to save even more in printing costs.

The price of the machines themselves has dropped by buckets and what they can do is way cooler than ever before. Not only can you print but also scan, fax (many do PC-Fax), copy, make your morning coffee, take out the garbage (ok not those last 2). Combining this many tasks obviously reduces the number of different machines in your home/office but in addition there’s only one manual you have to completely ignore instead of many (for the guys reading this).

When using inks that are photo quality, it is sensible to use photo quality paper for your printing. This ensures the best quality print out resulting from your photo quality cartridge. While these inks will print on regular paper, it is a waste to place the more expensive ink cartridge into your printer and then print on plain non-glossy paper.

For every day printing in black and white or even in color, remanufactured or non-original inks work great and save dollars for you in the long run. As a general rule of thumb, you need to purchase twice as many black inks because there is, on average, more black printing needs for the average person.

Nowadays manufacturers are including more and more technology into their products and trying to convince you that their ink has that extra special something. Epson uses DURABrite ink, HP uses Vivera ink and the list goes on. If you ever get bored and feel the need to work yourself into a frenzy just try surfing some of the major sites to compare exactly what one manufacturers ink does compared to the next. If you come away from this sane you’ll definitely know a lot more techie sounds words than you need to know today or in your next lifetime.

Many of the latest inks have cool gizmos in them like small chips designed to monitor the ink levels and tell you when its time to reorder and even little LEDs for those of you who want their printer to light up like a disco. The idea of the chip sounds great but there are cases where the chip is telling the printer to stop working too soon or even to not work at all if the consumables inside are not original (there’s been at least one of the major players recently sued over exactly this). To try and counter this a ‘chip resetter’ can be purchased which basically tells the chip to do as its told and keep on printing regardless of how much ink it thought was left in the tank. As far as the issue with these chips and non originals are concerned its actually illegal for a chip to stop your machine working on this basis but apparently this hasn’t deterred a few of the big boys. Whether a chip resetter will fix this problem is uncertain.

Whether you want to print graphics, brochures, or just letters, there is a printer that uses inks for you. Choose inks that meet your printing needs at affordable prices. Inks have evolved over the years in so many ways that they have in themselves become fairly hi tech let alone the machines that use them. Your average ink printer these days can perform a myriad of functions at prices seemingly getting cheaper by the minute.

Bottom line is yep your inks are getting more high tech and cooler (heck in the old days theres no way your ink or toner cartridge would actually light up with pretty colours for you and tell you when its about to run dry). The future is certainly going to be interesting seeing what comes next…..

Satellite Phones Today

Posted in Hardware Hub by admin on the April 30th, 2008

The world has come a long way since the early days of the ‘Sputnik’! Satellite systems are now providing both voice and data communication for parts of the world where there is little or no land or cell phone provision. Using satellite telephones help you to keep in contact when you are in the air or out at sea. They also help us to track and remain in contact with adventurers who test the limits of endurance and skill. We are able to follow their routes, talk to them and receive images and movies from wherever they may be and we can be instantly ready to help them when things don’t go quite according to the plan.

How does it work then? The satellite phone transmits a signal, via an antenna to an orbiting satellite in a network of satellites then back to a ground station and a standard land based phone network. Sounds good doesn’t it? However, the line of sight signal path between the satellite telephone and satellite must not be obstructed. Even bad weather can sometimes be a problem. In general, reception is much better outdoors but if you are on a boat at sea or in a plane in the air then an external antenna might be needed.

Right now there are five major satellite phone service providers. Global Star and Iridium are still the largest. They offer an array of options for both businesses and the average person in the street. Iridium is perhaps the best known of them all for a variety of reasons. The company uses a network of 66 operational low-earth-orbit satellites and they have an additional 13 spare satellites too. The satellites are in orbits roughly 485 miles above the surface of the Earth.

They supply to an extensive variety of markets which include construction, mining, government, leisure and maritime. They also provide equipment to the military and to rescue and disaster relief organisations. Companies tend to sell their services through a collection of service partners, value-added resellers and manufacturers.

Wherever there is a need for reliable, go-anywhere communications you will see satellite phones being used. The military make extensive use of them, as do airlines and shipping. They can also be invaluable in disaster areas where there it’s likely that land based communications have been disrupted by the disaster or never existed in the first place. Satellite phones can be tracked too. This can come in handy when guiding aircraft into isolated areas quickly.

Trucks that travel close to the Alaskan pipeline are being fitted with satellite phones in a bid to combat terrorism. If a truck gets hijacked then the authorities are notified instantly using the satellite network. Using the same satellite phone, the hijacked truck can be disabled before the terrorist has a chance to use it as a weapon.

As a method of communication satellite telephones remain a very expensive option. It is more expensive than most cell phone calls. As the technology improves and becomes more widely used, the prices should begin to drop. At the moment Iridium claim that the cost of a satellite phone call is similar to the cost of an international roaming call. To improve public perception and possibly build the consumer market the industry is fund raising in Washington state to provide satellite phones and airtime free of charge to US National Guard soldiers serving in Iraq.

Laptops Are Everywhere

Posted in Hardware Hub by admin on the April 14th, 2008

The laptop takeover of the world is well under way. Just about everywhere you look, you see one. In the office, at home, on a train commuting to work, there they are. Laptops, laptops everywhere. These devices can be time savers, can amuse a child of any age and can just make life easier in general. Yet, are they the wonder-item many people make them out to be?

If you’ve bumped into someone with a laptop case over one shoulder, a briefcase in hand and juggling a cup of coffee, you may answer an emphatic “No.” What about those people using laptops in a waiting room, that have spread stuff from here to eternity? Aren’t they annoying?

However, for a parent trying to finish a last-minute project in order to make a child’s school play, laptops are heaven sent. Even though it may bug a fellow passenger, that laptop user on the train feverishly clicking away at keys may be using the convenience of laptops so that he or she can coach a child’s baseball game.

Now that laptops no longer weigh about thirty pounds and aren’t twenty feet square (okay, that’s a little exaggeration), it’s easier than ever to cart one around. Some of the deluxe model laptops have a full-sized screen, a monstrous amount of memory and weigh less than two pounds. For someone who grew up prior to a computer in every classroom, this technology is amazing.

Of course, no matter how fascinating it is to think about the portability of laptops, there should be some concern about making work so portable. Conceivably you could take a bath and work at the same time, though that would seem to defeat the purpose of a relaxing soak. Now that you can work from anywhere, are today’s employees expected to do more work?

Maybe. Deadlines seem to be shorter, workloads higher and people worry about work constantly. Can this be blamed on laptops? Perhaps the problem lies with employees who have used such technology to accomplish more, faster, in an attempt to get ahead. Bosses come to expect the increase in production to become the new baseline.

It would seem to be an impossible conundrum, much like the question about which came first, the chicken or the egg. While telecommunication advances have shrunk the world, without laptops the pace at which employees need to work might not have changed.

Of course, laptops are not only for the workplace. Students at college swear by them, being able to take notes, write papers and talk to friends all at the same time. What a change from days gone by.

Laptops are in great use at home too. They take up significantly less room than a desktop and generally have the same capability. For someone in a small apartment or crowded house, a laptop may be the difference between having a computer and not having one.

No matter how you feel about laptops, they - and their successors - will be around for a long time. And if you think laptops are everywhere now, just wait as technology improves through the years to come. Eventually, the invasion will be complete.

Refurbished Laptop Batteries

Posted in Hardware Hub by admin on the March 21st, 2008

There are three refurbished laptop battery types, each named for its component materials:

Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) batteries are hardly ever seen anymore. They have dismally low capacities (2000-3000 mAH) and contain heavy metals that harm the environment. Worst of all is the dreaded “memory effect”. When you recharge a NiCad battery before it is completely drained, the longevity of the battery is compromised. That is the memory effect.

Nickel Metal Hybrid (NiMH) batteries have twice the capacity of NiCad batteries (4000-6000 mAH) and are half as susceptible to the memory effect. But these too are becoming rare.

Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries are today’s laptop battery standard. They have all the capacity of a NiMH battery, but zero memory effect and zero toxins. Bonus: Li-Ion batteries weigh half as much as NiMH batteries.

In purchasing a battery, the consumer has three options: used, refurbished, or new.

Used laptop batteries that are not refurbished will probably only last you 30 minutes to an hour before needing recharging.

Refurbished laptop batteries are available from most manufacturers and retailers of refurbished laptops. These batteries are renewed, recharged, and tested. They are much better than plain old used batteries, but not quite as good as new.

New laptop batteries last a good couple of years - 600-800 recharges - as long as they are properly cared for.

Extending Battery Power

Whenever you are using your laptop near a power source, use the A/C adaptor. However, sometimes you will be forced to use your laptop with no access to a wall outlet, and the battery will run low. Here are three things you can do to extend the remaining power in the battery:

First, if your laptop processor features a power-save mode, switch over to power-save mode. This will slow the laptop by up to 50%, doubling battery life for that time period.

Second, turn off extraneous energy-sucking elements. The major power vampires in your laptop are the hard drive, the CD and DVD drives, any networking devices, and any excessively bright screen settings.

Third, you can double overall battery capacity by installing a second battery. Your laptop must have a universal bay in order to do this. All you have to do is remove the CD-ROM or floppy drive and put a battery in its place.
