Domain Registration: How Many Extension Should You Register
When it comes to selection of a domain name, people are often inundated with several questions. One of the most important of them is which extension should I choose - dot-com or dot-net or dot-biz?
There are circumstances when you will think it is fit to register more than one extension. This article is aimed at helping you to make the right decision.
A common problem is that people usually type in .com all the time on net and land up on various other sites. This could be troublesome both for the business and the customer.
When you select a domain name, you are always given a list of different extensions to choose from. These extensions can help specify the type of products or services you are offering online or your geographical location.
To begin this article, I am giving some basic definitions of the extensions you can choose from:
* .com signifies “commercial”. It is the most well-known extension and preferred by all commercial enterprises. The acute scarcity of unforgettable .com domain names has led to creation of several other extensions.
* .net signifies “network”. It is generally used by internet service providers, web hosting companies, or other firms related to network or internet services.
* .org signifies “organization”. It is commonly used by non-commercial web sites. But, at present, many businesses register their matching .org extension to their .com domain names.
* .biz signifies “business”. It is used for business web sites. There are more chances of you getting this extension because of its low current penetration.
* .info signifies “information”. It is generally used for information sharing web sites. This too like .biz is gradually growing in popularity and there is more likelihood of you getting it.
Your first aim should be to get a perfect domain name for your business. Once you have done that you should then consider registering other extensions for the same domain name.
It is up to you to decide which extensions are most relevant for your business. It depends a lot on your customer base, range of products/services, and also your brand image.
You should always use domain forwarding service to redirect visitors from your other domains to your primary domain. This is quite essential since visitors may get confused about your web site address and may reach your competitor’s web site. For example, you domain name is home-appliances.net and your potential customers may reach home-appliances.com, which is your competitor.
Prevention is always better than cure. So, instead of buying a rival domain name from someone (at a high cost), it is always preferable to register that domain name yourself (at a low cost).
We find that name protection and greater coverage are the two key forces driving the need for registering more than one domain name. The accessibility of the site increases by registering more than one extension for a domain name.
There are other advantages of multiple domain name registration. It helps in creating a demand for similar domain names due to people realizing that so many domain names are available related to the primary one.
But some observers in the industry have a different viewpoint. They think that having more than one domain extension is very confusing for the visitors to these sites.
In conclusion, I would like to say that your primary target should be .com and thereafter, find out the relevant extensions for your business and try to register them also. I recommend you to register all relevant extensions so as to guarantee maximum coverage and minimum misguided competition.

Buy/Sell Domain Names! Is it Profitable?
I’ve just recently stumbled across a few web sites like namepros.com and dnforum, websites that focus solely on the buying and selling of domains. And I “gotta tell ya” I was quit impressed to hear some of the success stories.
Now from my understanding, I thought profit from domain sales died at the end of the dotcom Boom. But from what I’ve seen and heard, It seems like it can be a lucrative business. Naturally there’s more to it than buying a domain name for $5.99 a year and turning around and selling it for $4,000. To come across a domain name (whether self created, expired, or purchased) spending time advertising it, sending traffic to where it’s parked, finding a broker, doing the things you need to do to up the value of the name, it’s seems like a very time consuming business.
But if you go to Sedo.com you’d be amazed at the prices that some of these domains are going for, $5,000, $10,000, even more.
It seems to me like a hidden art. There’s not very much talk about it in the general internet marketing forums. And everywhere on the net you see ebooks on “How To” write ebooks for profit, do JV (joint venture) deals, ebooks on site traffic, blogging techniques, affiliate marketing, rss feeds…… on and on and on and very little information on the business of buying and selling domain names. So that means it’s a business who’s time has passed or a very lucrative one that’s hidden from the people who jump on the bandwagon.
Just looking at current events and doing domain checks on certain subjects tells me how quickly good domains get snatched up. Believe it or not the name Farris Hassan dot com (16 year old boy who went to Iraq) is already taken.
From my studies it seems that there are a select few who are generously profiting from the buying and selling of domain names. As I mentioned above there is alot of work involved but if your willing to join a few membership sites, learn a few advertising tricks and get into the game, the selling of domain names can be a very lucrative business.

Good Domain Names Make Your Dreams Memorable
“What was the name of that website? It was good. It has something to do with…”
Is your web site like many others?
Domain names always on the tip of a visitor’s tongue, but not quite memorable enough?
Your choice of domain name needs to be easy to remember, as well as focused enough that your visitor will know right away what your site is about.
A Few Rules
Some rules do apply when deciding on a domain name:
- Domain names must be at least two characters long but no more than 63 characters, not counting the TLD.
- You can use any combination of letters, numbers, or hyphens, but you can’t use a hyphen as the first or last character.
- Domain names are not case-sensitive, so my-home-based-business-advisor.com is the same as My-Home-Based-Business-Advisor.com.
Choosing A Domain Name
Choosing good domain names is almost as important as choosing your actual business (see our Startup Ideas page).
There are many different schools of thought when it comes to picking good domain names.
Some say to choose a short, concise name.
Some like numbers in the name, some don’t.
Hyphens and underscores — as opposed to words all running together — are another debated topic. It’s mostly a matter of easier reading for your human visitors. Which do you find easier to read?
myhomebasedbusinessadvisormy_home_based_business_advisor
my-home-based-business-advisor
Generally, the hyphens between words make domain names easier to read for most people.
While search engines don’t rank domain names, a keyword-rich name will let your visitors know what your web site is about before they get there. This makes them more comfortable because they know what they’re getting in advance.
Also, when you get other sites to link to yours, that link is usually based on your domain name. This means that your main keyphrase (which you used as your domain name) will be the actual anchor text and search engines do give additional ranking for that.
Domain names play a major role in making your dream memorable to the world.
Take the time to do it right and your dream of a home-based business will be seen all over the world!

1-800-Get-Rich Can Toll Free 800 Number Domains Pay Off?
The toll free number 1-800-Get-Rich belongs to the Resorts
Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. Perfect vanity number for a
casino, right? Well apparently not. Their website shows the
actual numbers, 1-800-438-7424 for the marketing department
of Resorts Atlantic City. Those NUMBERS are nowhere near as
memorable as is the mnemonic device of letters representing
those numbers on the telephone keypad. It makes you wonder,
did the casino have bad luck (no pun intended) or receive
bad publicity for their 800-Get-Rich phone number?
Doing a Google search for 1-800-GET-RICH returns several spoof
articles using the toll free number to make light of get rich
quick schemes. Seems as well suited to a casino as to satire,
since gambling represents the ultimate get rich quick scheme.
But on the web there’s a another element to toll free numbers
you must consider. 800 numbers are used as domain names which
seem to stick in our memory as a web address just as well as
a phone number. Resorts Atlantic City Hotel Casino should buy
the domain name www.1800getrich.com from the current owner and assign their marketing department toll free 800 vanity number to the Casino instead.
The domain name www.1800GetRich.com is for sale as of this writing if you visit that web address. You can be certain that the current domain
owner knows that the toll free vanity telephone number is
owned by Resorts International Hotels www.resortsac.com which
matches the domain www.1800getrich.com. It has to be enticing
to think a large international hotel corporation may want his domain.
The casino owns the toll free number but isn’t using the
mnemonic for the numbers (GET-RICH for 438-7424). Makes you wonder about the history of the domain name, since WHOIS records show it was reserved only
this past May of 2004, AND the history of the vanity number
since it is going unused, at least on the web site. Hmmmm…
There are vanity phone number resellers online that actually
specialize in providing 800 numbers with matching domain name
for those seeking the consistent branding for their business.
Clearly this is simply a marketing ploy by savvy 800 number
vendors, as those domains may be full of hyphens and may cost
more than they should due to the perception of value-added.
An interesting aspect to toll free numbers as domain names is
that of 1-800 copyright and trademarks. Take for example, the
well known flower retailer 1-800-FLOWERS.com where they use
both the domain name and the toll free number. Both are copy-
righted and trademarked names and essential to the business.
Legal precedent allows trademark owners to confiscate domains
from “cybersquatters” who buy domain names containing trade-
marked or copyrighted words and phrases hoping to sell that
domain back to the trademark holder. But it is less clear an
issue when it comes to descriptive toll free and vanity phone
numbers. How about 1-800-PINDROP.com - which you would think
would be registered to Sprint Communications? Curiously, as
of October of 2004, this domain was available. What do they
use? www.pindrop.com (without the 1-800) goes to Sprint.com.
It appears there are wide inconsistencies in using toll free
800 phone numbers as domain names but they can be memorable,
which is one measure of a good domain name. They also aren’t
limiting as to word length. I’ve always felt it’s a bit odd
to type in 1800keywordphrase.com as a domain name, but only
because there is no hyphen in it. 1800 looks like eighteen
hundred and is just as strange as typing 247 for domains as
a suggestion they are always open, more often seen as 24/7,
but domain names can’t have that slash mark in them.
As a matter of fact, I’ve always disliked numbers of any
kind in domain names - especially those using numbers in
place of the words “to” (up2me.com)& “for” (good4you.com)
But, as owner of http://website101.com I’m at odds with the
dislike for numbers in domain names. Still, it works better
than 1800website.com or 1-800-website.com, both owned by
Verio Web Hosting and both purchased in August of 1996, but
neither have web sites configured at those addresses. They
must not have been a worthwhile domains, yet they keep them.
If it offers you another option for a memorable web address,
800 number domains may be worth considering.

How To Pick A Web Site Domain Name For Your Company Or Law Firm
Your web site is located by an IP (Internet Protocol) address such as 67.15.4.94 and is accessible on the Internet by typing http://67.15.4.94. Instead of typing a series of numbers which are difficult to remember, you can register an easier to remember domain name which becomes associated with your IP address. Visitors typing an easy to remember domain name will be pointed to your IP address. Similar to a 1-800 vanity phone number, some domain names pertain to the subject of the web site, while others may simply be the name or an abbreviation of your firm.
Lawyer-Advertising-Blog.com is the primary domain name for my blog, which is instantly obvious that it is a blog concerning lawyer advertising. When you type that domain name into the address bar of your browser, the domain name servers on the Internet know that you’re looking for http://67.15.4.94 and take you there. You can have multiple domain names pointing to the same web site. For instance, I also registered LawyerAdvertisingBlog.com (without hyphens) which is used for branding because people never type hyphens. Because some people may remember the name incorrectly, I also registered many other domain names such as AttorneyAdvertisingBlog.com, LawFirmAdvertisingBlog.com and others, all of which will bring the visitor to Lawyer-Advertising-Blog.com.
Tips to help you pick a domain name:
1) Choosing: Choosing a domain name is a lot like choosing a name for your company or law firm. Ideally the name should be consistent with your branding. Determine whether you are branding the name of your company, product or service. Your domain name should be good for branding - short, easy to remember, and has a “ring” to it or creates an image in the mind of the consumer.
2) Trademark: Before registering your domain name, be sure to check the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to make sure that the name has not been trademarked. You can check at www.uspto.gov, click on Search under Trademarks. Assuming that your choice has not been trademarked and you have now registered a non-generic domain name, you may want to protect your name by filing a Trademark or Service mark application.
3) Ownership: When you register a domain name, make sure that you are the registrant of your domain name. Some web site design firms will register your domain name with their name as the registrant. This will give them ownership of your name keeping you hostage. You can easily register your domain name yourself for $8.95 per year at 8.95Domains.com or GoDaddy.com.
4) Hyphens: There have been misunderstandings about whether to use hyphens in a domain name. First of all, the domain name you give out to the public must not have hyphens. The domain name without hyphens is the domain name that everyone will type in the address bar of their Internet browser.
The reason that some people say that you should have a domain name with hyphens is to force the search engines to see keywords in your domain name so that your web site does better in search engine results. The bigger search engines can now see individual words without hyphens, however, smaller search engines may not and even the bigger ones may see a word differently than you want.
Thus, the importance of using a hyphenated domain name has diminished. If you wish to use a hyphenated domain name as I did with Lawyer-Advertising-Blog.com, you should also register the unhyphenated domain name which you will forward to the hyphenated domain name. Use the unhyphenated domain name in print and advertising.
5) Extensions: Domain names are available with various extensions, such as .com, .net, .org and many other extensions. If it’s really important to you, you can register domain names in several extensions, however, for most firms only the .com extension is important. If you feel that you need to use .org, you should also register your name in the .com extension.
The .com extension is similar to 1-800 for telephone numbers. Most people automatically dial 1-800 even when they see 1-888. Likewise, most people will type
.com even when they see .net or .org. Additionally, many people including myself simply type in the domain name without http://www. or .com and press “Control, Enter”. Pressing “Control, Enter” will type http://www. and .com for you, automatically taking you to a web site with .com.
6) Top Level Domain vs. Sub-Level Domains: A sub level domain is a second level domain under a first level domain name and can look like yourfirm.freehosting.com. You must have your own domain name. Do not under any circumstances use a free hosting service, since free hosting services will only give you a sub level domain. No one will ever remember it and it’s sort of like handwriting your own letterhead.
7) Ethics for Law Firm Domain Names: A website name should be used as an address, not a trade name which is prohibited. Advertise your web site name as an address, a means for people to find your web site, not a trade name. Like a vanity telephone number, some web site domain names can violate legal ethics. Make sure that your web site name avoids use of certain words which could create a potentially incorrect expectation in the mind of the consumer or violate one of the other ethics rules.
Your domain name should not imply that you are better than another lawyer or that you can accomplish something that may not actually occur. Use of words such as “BEST”, “TOP”, “FOREMOST, “LEADING”, “WIN” and similar words in a web site domain name could create a misleading expectation in the mind of the consumer and will violate ethics rules in most states.
For instance, LeadingLawyer.com or BestLawyer.com will likely violate lawyer ethics rules by implying that you are a leading lawyer or the best lawyer. The question is by what standards are you leading or the best and in what? WinningLawyer.com or WinningCase.com may be better for a casino, because it will imply that the person who becomes a client of the firm will win money when, that may not happen and even if it does, it’s an award for just compensation, not gambling.
Laura Hodes in her article for the ABA Journal entitled Vanity Phone Numbers Make Your Firm Less Forgettable, at http://www.hurt911.org/hurt-911-articles/ABAJournal.htm, quoted Will Hornsby, an expert on lawyer advertising and staff counsel in the ABA Division for Legal Services, who said that while there is nothing unethical about vanity numbers, “1-800-I-WIN-CASES would be unethical because it is making an unsubstantiated claim, creating unjustified expectations that can be true but still be misleading.” The same can be said about domain names.
Advertising Your Domain Name: Be sure to include your domain name on your business cards, letterhead, and all advertising. When advertising in off-line media, always advertise your domain name with www. and without http://, such as www.LawyerAdvertisingBlog.com. Note that when publishing your domain name on the Internet, you may sometimes want to use http:// to ensure that you create a link back to your web site. When advertising in off-line media, always advertise a domain name without hyphens.

Choosing the Right Domain To Sell
Many people got lucky and sold their domain for unbelievable prices. Was that pure luck? Or was there something that we still don’t know? Is there still domain-gold left in the already mined domain market, to lay our hands on? Lets see.
First of all what we will look in some of the main reasons which makes a domain priceless and sellable.
# Generic or Day to Day life words.
# Their extensions weather it is .com or .net. Its popularity. (Right now .com)
# Less characters. (Say 4 or 5 at most)
# Their pronunciation. (Don’t say epdu or something else it is not pronounceable)
# The keyboard relationship. (It would be easier to type in “tyru” instead of “oqzk”. Some companies who wants brandable names see this)
Now If we look into the very first point about generic or day to day life words most of them are taken. So how to find some other? Here is the tip. Just try and sit with a pen and paper when you are watching television. Write down the words that you think might be available as a domain name. You can do the same when you are reading some novel or newspaper. This trick surely pays I got many of my domains watching “Terminator” and “Home Alone” kind of movies.
Now the extension. If you have found out a great word which is already registered with .com extension. Then you can try other TLD’s. But in this you run into some kind of risk. You can surely reg “fast.net” & “Love.net” but you can’t bet your money on “babyboydomains.net” or “Simplyrockingnames.org”. So just apply some thinking over here.
Talking about less characters If you find a 3 letter name then just pounce on it. It really has the market. But there are none available right now. So look for 4 or 5 character names. Apply all our rules that we saw before and even then if it passes through all that steps without a hitch then take it in.
Pronounceable or not is also a factor. If you know english language, which I think you will be knowing as you are reading this article then there are no problems. For those who are weak at english they can try http://www.thesaurus.com or any other dictionaries which are available online to look for that name.
Don’t get discouraged if your word is not listed in it. You can surely ask some other guy on chat who is not interested in domains about this word. Otherwise the guy to whom you are asking may reg it before you and all your dreams might get shattered into pieces.
The last but not the least is the keyboard relationship. Some companies may look into it. If they are willing to spend their millions for this domain and other millions for marketing it and making it into a brand. You can try this. some words are just a flick on keyboard. As I said before “tyru” is easy to type in. while oqzk is a bit tougher. Just try it and see the difference.

Domain Name Registration and Search Engine Rankings
The Registration of domain names is a thriving business on the Internet today - this is evident by the high bids that companies are willing to pay in Per-Per-Click (PPC) engines to attract potential customers for domain name registration.
The business of domain name registration is sometimes referred to as “Internet Real Estate”. Just like we can occupy high traffic areas in the central business districts of major cities in the real world, we can register domains for commonly used words or sought after keywords to generate traffic more easily to our websites. While most common words and abbreviations have already been taken for the most widely used top level domain names, with a little bit of creativity we can still register an endless number of promising domain names.
While there is no clear indication to what extent .com, .net as well as country top level domain names such as .co.uk, .de, .fr and so forth influence search engine rankings of websites, the word is that .org domains are still favored by Google as part of the non-commercial tradition.
However, this article is not looking at how the domain extension influences the ranking of a website as this is thought to be insignificant for search engine rankings. A stronger influence on search engine rankings have indeed the length of registration, frequency of DNS changes as well as the reputation of the registrar.
Even though sometimes overrated in its importance - especially in relationship to its effect on search engine rankings, domain names do remain an important asset for the online corporate identity of your business.
The main consideration concerning your domain name will be to choose between a creative name (such as “yahoo”, “alibaba”, “kazaa”) or a keyword name (such as “study-tourism”, “retail-gifts” or “hawaii-mortgage-company”. In fact using main keywords in your domain name does have a positive effect on your search engine rankings, especially to get your rankings off the ground after launching a new website. Down the road the effect however becomes almost negligible.
While many people tend to register numerous domain names to accommodate most important key words within them, they overlook that Google and other major search engines will pay almost the same attention to sub-domains. So instead of registering “hawaii-real-estate”, “florida-real-estate” and so forth, we might as well just register “real-estate” and have sub domains such as “hawaii.real-estate”, “florida.real-estate” and so forth.
What people further underestimate is that search engines in general look for keywords in the URL (unique resource locator) which comprises of the top level domain, any potential sub-domains and of course the file name. So, if you happen to be using a creative domain name that does not contain any important key words, you can of course include your main keywords in the file name of the webpage itself, i.e. florida-real-estate.html.
Hence, in a nutshell, while domain names are a major asset for your corporate identity, their significance for search engine rankings is overrated, as there are various ways to accommodate significant keywords in the URL and eventually other onsite factors (coding techniques, content) of a website will have a greater impact for search engine rankings.

The Value of Finance and Debt Related Domain Names
Why domain names can be a good investment!
We have a number of generic finance related domain names and have recently added to these through the £14,000 investment in debtconsolidation.co.uk and the purchase of debtfree.co.uk.
It’s true that debt consolidation is one of the hottest terms especially in respect of PPC’s and we believe we will get free traffic from people guessing the domains when they are looking for debt consolidation or debt free i.e. people that are looking for debt consolidation will enter debtconsolidation.co.uk in the toolbar rather than searching for debt consolidation on a search engine. Both debt consolidation and debt free are amongst the most searched for terms on the internet and you would therefore expect a percentage of people looking for these terms to guess the domain. Many domain investors use the overture search rank as a key to the potential value of a generic domain. i.e. if a lot of people search for a term then a smaller proportion will second-guess what the domain name will be.
A good generic domain name can also help with search engine placement. Approximately 12 months ago debtconsolidation.co.uk used to be at the top of google for debt consolidation but someone must have failed to renew! www.debtconsolidation.co.uk is already on the 1st page of msn.co.uk for debt consolidation out of 17,265,739 results. Debt Consolidation is a very hard term to get to the top of especially only after website was launched 2 weeks ago. (Website is still temporary!). So I believe domain name has played a big part in it. This seems especially true for msn. Try searching for debt consolidation loans on msn and look at all the domains that are top! Only 1 in the Top 10 doesn’t have debt consolidation loan in the domain name!! That’s the beauty and the value of a generic domain!!
A domain name can also be of use through pay per click advertising (PPC). We advertise extensively through google adwords and what we have found is that the domain can have a direct effect on your Click through ratios (CTR’s) and hence the amount you need to pay per click. We advertise on google and where the domain is similar to the search terms you generate significantly more traffic (hence why espotting (miva) insist you include the search term in your title).
When you are valuing a domain for a business as well as looking at how much people will pay for a PPC it is also worth looking at how much they will pay for a successful application. This is really where the true value can be seen.
We are therefore confident that generic domain names (that are business related) are definitely good investments for the future and it’s wise to buy before others realise it too! We will definitely be looking for new ones that come available.
I think some of the bigger companies aren’t on the same page yet. It is too difficult to get approval for a purchase off someone who doesn’t understand the potential value. Often they also outsource their internet advertising so there is no one in the business that understands the internet.
So to summarise a domain name can have considerable value if it is able to generic free relevant traffic to your website. Also as the internet grows and users become more sophisticated in how they search then we would expect the value of domain names to increase further.
